In the age of hyperbole, branding a place super is just begging to be made fun of. Pier 57 actually delivers the goods: a pier made up of three giant hollow concrete boxes, its length equal to the height of a medium skyscraper, floating on the Hudson, supporting a steel superstructure above it. A February 1952 issue of Popular Mechanics described it as "Superpier", a name too good to pass up. The pier was added to both the New York State and National Register of Historic Places for its engineering significance. Super Pier, indeed.
